What Is a Kokeshi Doll?

A Kokeshi is a traditional Japanese wooden doll, hand-carved from natural wood and characterized by its simple form with no arms or legs. Despite its minimal shape, each Kokeshi carries deep cultural meaning and showcases the refined craftsmanship of Japanese folk art.

There are two main types of Kokeshi dolls:

Traditional Kokeshi (伝統こけし)
Originating in Japan’s Tohoku region during the late Edo period (1603–1868), traditional Kokeshi are made using techniques passed down from master to apprentice. Their designs follow strict regional styles and reflect centuries-old traditions.

Creative Kokeshi (創作こけし)
Creative Kokeshi emerged after World War II, around 1947, allowing artists full freedom of expression in form, color, and design. Since 1954, outstanding works have been recognized with the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award, elevating creative Kokeshi to the status of collectible Japanese art.
