Musha Samurai Japanese Kokeshi Doll – Usaburo

Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, handcrafted with a simple form — typically without arms or legs — yet rich in cultural meaning and artistic beauty. There are two main types:

• 伝統こけし (Traditional Kokeshi) – A folk art originating in Japan’s Tohoku region during the late Edo period, created using time-honored techniques passed from master to apprentice.

• 創作こけし (Creative Kokeshi) – Modern interpretations shaped by each artist’s unique vision, using original techniques. This style gained popularity after 1947, with exceptional works celebrated annually by the Prime Minister’s Award since 1954.

This 近代創作こけし (modern creative Kokeshi) is called 武者 Musha, which translates to Warrior in Japanese.

Its rounded body features a brave yet adorable young warrior dressed in vivid red armour and a samurai helmet with a golden crest. The detailed design is carved into the wooden surface before being carefully coloured, giving the armour and facial features a distinctive textured appearance.

Created by Usaburo Kokeshi in Japan, this compact samurai makes a meaningful gift or decoration symbolising courage, strength and the wish for children to grow up healthy and strong.

A small wooden name plaque reading 武者 (Musha – warrior) is included.

As each doll is crafted from natural wood, slight variations in colour, wood grain and painted details may occur.
