Kokeshi (こけし) are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, hand-carved and painted, typically without arms or legs.
There are two main types:
-
伝統こけし (Traditional Kokeshi): Folk art dolls from the Tohoku region, originating in the late Edo period and crafted using time-honored techniques passed from master to apprentice.
-
創作こけし (Creative Kokeshi): Modern interpretations shaped by the artist’s own vision, using original methods. This style gained popularity after WWII in 1947, and since 1954, the Prime Minister’s Award has honored exceptional Creative Kokeshi artworks.
About the ‘Akikaze’ Creative Kokeshi
The Akikaze (秋風 – “Autumn Breeze”) Kokeshi is a modern Creative Kokeshi handcrafted by award-winning artist Izumi (いづみ).
This exquisite doll wears a bellflower kanzashi hair ornament and a dark blue kimono with a delicate dragonfly motif, evoking the serene beauty of a cool autumn evening.
Each piece is entirely hand-painted using Japanese painting techniques, giving the lines a refined elegance and the colors the soft, layered richness of traditional Japanese art.
With only a small number produced, Akikaze is a rare and collectible work of art.
