What is Kokeshi
Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, hand-carved from wood and known for their simple design without arms or legs. There are two main types:
伝統こけし (Traditional Kokeshi): This folk art originated in the Tohoku region during the late Edo period, with techniques passed down from master to apprentice.
創作こけし (Creative Kokeshi): These dolls emerged after WWII and are crafted based on the artist’s original designs. Since 1954, the Prime Minister’s Award has honored the best creative Kokeshi, making them recognized as unique works of art.
Hana Guruma – Modern Creative Kokeshi Doll by Usaburo
This elegant 近代創作こけし (modern creative Kokeshi) named 花車 Hana Guruma, meaning Flower Cart in Japanese, is a striking example of Usaburo’s master craftsmanship.
Standing 18.5 cm tall, Hana Guruma is dressed in a deep, dark red kimono adorned with hand-painted flowers in white, black, and yellow accents.
The doll’s smooth, rounded form and serene facial expression reflect the gentle beauty of Japanese aesthetics, while the bold floral patterns bring a vibrant, modern touch.
Crafted from wood and finished by hand, each Hana Guruma is unique, carrying the subtle variations that make hand-made works of art so special.
Whether displayed as a statement piece in your home or given as a meaningful gift, Hana Guruma embodies elegance, tradition, and the timeless charm of Japanese Kokeshi dolls.
