Kumihimo – gathered threads

j-okini
Nov 9, 2016 Japanese culture 0 Comment

Kumihimo is a Japanese word for “gathered – kumi, threads – himo”.  Kumihimo is a Japanese technique of braiding strands of silk to creat intricately colored cords.    Samurai once used Kumihimo as laces for their armor.  Kumihimo is still used for an accessory for Kimono to tie Obi (Obijime) and also as laces for tea ceremony utensils.

Kumihimo is now very popular in Japan after an Oscar qualified movie ‘Your Name – Kimi no Na wa’ – Japanese animated youth science fiction fantasy film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai.

In the movie, the girl Mitsuba uses Kumihimo to bind her hair and it will become a key of the story.

People who became fan of this movie visit the place where featured in the movie and they buy and even make bracelets and smart phone straps from Kumihimo.

This is a Hand-made Silk Kumihimo bracelet that a traditional shop in Kyoto is selling.  It seems they are getting so many orders that it takes around 3 weeks to dispatch!
