How to make Hojicha at home

Apr 8, 2020 Japanese tea, Recipes 0 Comment

Hojicha is high flavoured roasted Japanese green tea.  I would like to show you how to make Hojicha at home.  You can roast Sencha tea leaves to make Hojicha.  Normally Hojicha is made from the lower part of leaves and stems of tea plants and steamed like other Japanese tea then roasted.  It is categorised lower grade than Sencha.  It is also drunk in the evening and kids also drink since almost no caffeine in this tea.

By roasting Sencha leaves, you can enjoy the nice aroma during the making.  You will not understand until you do it but it is a nice relaxing experience!

It’s pretty easy if you read the steps and understand it.  I also created a video.

<<What you need>>

1) 1 or 2 tbsp Sencha tea leaves

2) Frying pan with a lid

3) Chopsticks for cooking or spatura

4) Damp cloth

<<Method>>

  1. Heat the empty frying pan for 30 seconds with high heat and turn off the fire
  2. Put the frying pan on a damp cloth for 2 seconds
  3. Put Sencha tea leaves and spread them evenly and close the lid
  4. With lid closed, wait for 2 minutes and 30 seconds
  5. Remove the lid and turn on the fire with high heat for 1 minute while stirring leaves with chopsticks (you will start to smell nice aroma)
  6. Turn off the fire when you start to see the smoke.  Continue roasting without fire on the hob for another minute
  7. Remove from hob and ready!
  8. Brew it for 2 minute in 95 degree hot water.

I found a few photos of Hojicha on Instagram.  It is also sold in powder form like Matcha and they make Hojicha latte in Japan 🙂
