What is Kokeshi
Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, hand-carved from wood and known for their simple design without arms or legs. There are two main types:
伝統こけし (Traditional Kokeshi): This folk art originated in the Tohoku region during the late Edo period, with techniques passed down from master to apprentice.
創作こけし (Creative Kokeshi): These dolls emerged after WWII and are crafted based on the artist’s original designs. Since 1954, the Prime Minister’s Award has honored the best creative Kokeshi, making them recognized as unique works of art.
Yume Komori – Modern Creative Kokeshi Doll by Usaburo
The Yume Komori (夢子守, “Dream Guardian”) Kokeshi doll by the award-winning Usaburo workshop is a heartwarming piece that beautifully captures the tenderness of motherhood.
Standing at 19.5 cm tall, this large creative Kokeshi features a mother gently cradling her baby inside a shimmering silver and pink haori. The sparkling pink hue adds a soft, dreamlike glow, while delicate sakura (cherry blossom) motifs adorn the robe. In Japanese culture, sakura symbolizes new beginnings, making this piece a meaningful gift for celebrating birth, family bonds, or fresh chapters in life.
Each doll is carefully hand-crafted from wood and finished with Usaburo’s signature attention to detail, giving it both emotional depth and artistic elegance. A touching representation of love, protection, and renewal, Yume Komori is a keepsake to be cherished for generations.
