Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, handcrafted without arms or legs and known for their charming, minimalist design.
There are two main types:
Traditional Kokeshi (δΌη΅±γγγ) β A folk craft from the Tohoku region, dating back to the late Edo period. These are made using techniques passed down from master to apprentice.
Creative Kokeshi (ε΅δ½γγγ) β Introduced after World War II, these dolls reflect each artistβs imagination and unique techniques. Since 1954, outstanding works have been honored with the Prime Ministerβs Award, highlighting their cultural and artistic value.
